So, You Think You Have An STI/STD/VD…

If you think you’ve picked up something from having sex, here’s a 5-step process to help you get rid of it

Fear not, you’re not the first person to have to go through the process of realising that you might have, or do have an STI*/STD*/VD*

(*Sexually Transmitted Infection / *Sexually Transmitted Disease / *Venereal Disease – three acronyms which essentially mean the same thing)

And trust me, you won’t be the last.

Once you’ve got past the ‘I can’t believe this is happening to me stage,’ it’s time to do something about it. Nobody wins from waiting.

To help you out, here’s a 5-step guide of what to do:

👨‍⚕️Don’t ignore it. Just don’t ignore. While it may be nothing, it also may be something. So, don’t just continue having sex with people and passing it on to them. Because that’s not cool, right? And don’t just hope it’ll go away either, because it probably won’t.

👨‍⚕️Diagnose it. Preferably by visiting a doctor or a sexual health clinic – as the internet is not always the most reliable of places in these situations. The NHS are pretty good with this stuff. Plus there’s no major shame in it, STIs/STDs/VDs are pretty common

👨‍⚕️If you are diagnosed with an STI/STD/VD, you’re going to need to tell people you’ve recently slept with about it, so they can be tested for it too. This might be the hardest part of your experience, but trust me, they’ll want to know – and by being proactive you can stop other people unwittingly passing the issue on.

👨‍⚕️Get it treated (and don’t have sex during treatment – and yes, that includes oral sex)

👨‍⚕️Once you’ve been given the ‘all clear’, go back to practicing safe sex. Always remember, the only contraceptives that will protect you against STIs and STDs are male and female condoms.
